After almost 8 years, Providence afterhours venue Therapy will be coming to a close tonight.
This is a great loss for the whole New England dance music community. I can’t even begin to mention how may people got thier start DJing there, myself included. Jeff LeClair, General Manager of the club has to be one of the honest, smart and most professional promoters in the area, and helped a lot of people be noticed through his work at Therapy, and as the head of Volume Productions. He released this statement on facebook:
The club is closing after the event this Saturday. We will be open from 9pm-7am. The bar will not be open.
The originally scheduled event with Theo will be rescheduled to another area venue in the near future. While we love Theo and he’s been a great guest headliner to the club, we felt it would be more fitting to put on local regulars to the club that have played there and supported us throughout the years. All the other future events are being rescheduled as well, including Manuel de la Mare, and Boris. The event invites have not been ‘cancelled’ yet so that we can post the substitute venue and new date when it is determined.
On that note, we had planned to have the closing party on December 10. With this in mind, we were trying to get as many DJs on as we could over the next month to give them their last set as a goodbye to the club. Unfortunately we were blindsided by the ongoing leaseholder/landlord argument finally coming to an unresolvable conclusion. DJs: Please understand that this is not the way that any of us thought it would end, and we were planning to include as many performers as we could over the month, but we simply can not at this point. The club is closing, and while its sad and regrettable that you may not have ‘one last time’ to play, please be respectful and understanding of those who do play, and of the club itself.
As mentioned, the club is closing because of a lease disagreement. The lease was supposed to expire January 1, 2012.
Those involved in the dispute simply could not negotiate terms acceptable to both parties for a new lease. Multiple attempts at resolving the dispute only led to more problems. Legal action was taken and we were faced with a difficult choice – close this weekend, try to resolve it next week (which wasnt likely, and we would still close in December)… or open this weekend under the terms that Saturday would be our last night. Rather than perpetuating an already arduous conflict, we chose to close after this Saturday.
Some of the equipment will be sold. A majority of the equipment is privately owned and was rented so that will go back to the original owners, including: CDJs, mixers, turntables, some lights, some speakers, lasers. We will post what is available when an inventory is made.
We don’t know what will happen to the building. We don’t know if it will become something else or not. It won’t be torn down, there is a cell phone tower on the top of the building that needs to remain there.
The Therapy page and the Therapy group will remain operational to inform you of any new information.
Thanks everyone.
Therapy had its up and downs over the years, as do many clubs that cater to electronic dance music, but the friendships and memories made there will last a lifetime.
